The COAR children have the great Salvadoran tradition of the Via Crucis – The Way of the Cross. All over El Salvador, in small towns and big schools (like COAR) they recreate the events of Jesus’ life leading to his crucifixion. They begin with the Last Supper on Holy Thursday (Passover in Jesus’ day), which includes Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.  Then follows Jesus’ agony in the garden of Gethsemane and his arrest.  The next day they start with Jesus’ trial, Pontius Pilate washing his hands of his responsibility, and then the long walk to his crucifixion.  They do not spare the drama and gothic flourish.  It is wonderful and awesome to behold in person.

When Jesus falls, and Simon helps him carry the cross – all we see is the COAR kids helping and healing each other – thanks to you.

Do not despair!  The pageant ends with Jesus resurrected, the empty tomb, and redemption.  What better message could there be for children who know profound suffering?
