Executive Director’s Reflections

Guest essay: Susan Dinehart [nee: Barnish], Programs Director

A scholarship program affords students many opportunities. Of course, the basis of that is education. But at a school like COAR, which represents a cross-section of children from different backgrounds and different villages, students can learn so much more. One of the most important of these is that intelligence and talent can be anywhere – and that those skills are rewarded with praise and good grades. Students are also exposed to family situations that contrast to their own. It’s a way to help them learn about differences and acceptance. It doesn’t always mean that the poorest kid in class will befriend the richest and their lives will be forever changed, but it can certainly mean, at least for these students, that they can learn from each other and from the experiences they share together, both in school and out.
