In January of 2014, Salvadoran President Funes proposed changing the name of El Salvador’s largest and most important airport in honor of the slain Archbishop and Social Justice Leader who was assassinated on March 24, 1980.
On March 19th, the Salvadoran Legislature approved the measure without the support of the ARENA or PDC parties. On March 24, 2014, out-going Salvadoran President Mauricio Funes unveiled the plaque at the airport making the name change official.
In June, 2014, per Salvadoran law, the new President of El Salvador, Salvador Sanchez Ceren, will be sworn in to office. Salvador Sanchez Ceren and out-going President Mauricio Funes are both members of the FMLN party.
The President of El Salvador serves a 5 year term and then must sit out a term before running for the Presidency again
